Summertime Eating - Can it be healthy?

Aaaah! The sweet sounds of the ocean. Maybe you are more of a pool person. What about the Fiesta? Either way, summertime is officially upon us. There is no better time of year especially on the North Shore. But summer can be a struggle if you are trying to watch your caloric intake or eat healthy. This is also the perfect time of year to practice moderation. Let's be honest - we don't expect (or want) you to give up your social life. Here are a few Do's and Don'ts to a healthier summer.

DO - Bring your favorite healthy recipe to share!

If you bring one or two healthy dishes to share, you know there will be at least one nutritious choice. Depending on the party, you may even be able to bring your own meat or protein.

DON'T - Go to a cookout on an empty stomach!

Find out what time the meal will be served before heading to the party. Have a healthy snack ahead of time if you know you won’t be eating for a few hours.

DO - Load up on fruit and veggies!

A veggie tray or fruit salad is an easy option! Make half of your plate fruits and veggies and boom a nice, balanced meal. Veggies are also great source of fiber.

DON'T - Go overboard on the booze!

We get it. Cold Rockport Brewing Co. beer. Refreshing margarita. Or maybe you are a High Noon kind of person. Research reveals that alcohol can interfere with your muscle growth, as well as slow your post-exercise recovery process. Make a plan ahead of time. Maybe it's one drink. Maybe it's two drinks and skip dessert. Making better drink choices is always an option too. Moderation here is key! Pro tip: No one wants to be "THE" drunk one anyway.

DO - Skip the bun!

Burgers are delicious on their own. Maybe try it in a lettuce wrap?

DON'T - Forget about those condiments!

Condiments are forgettable calories. Dressings can be an easy indicator that a dish is packed with fat and calories, so traditional mayonnaise-based coleslaw isn't exactly a weight-loss friendly choice.

DO - Have fun with zero guilt!

Did you did go a little overboard on the potato salad? Don't beat yourself up. Start over tomorrow and move forward. Just because you indulged doesn't mean you need to overdo it at the gym. It's all about balance.

Happy Summer everyone. See you at the gym! Or better yet - the beach! Viva!
